For Good Trolling Motors Offers A Recommendable Destination

By Janet Mitchell

A motor designed for trolling is still a motor only that it is designed to be small and self-contained. It comes with an electric motor, controls, and a propeller. The three components make a self-contained unit that is usually attached to the watercraft. The motor is mostly used for fishing. This invention was made at the advent of the century and since then, millions of these products have been produced and sold worldwide. Here are facts regarding trolling motors.

Sometimes trolling is done using kickers or small gas outboards of about one to two horsepower. However, fishing activities are less efficient when using such means of propulsion. Fish are scared by these devices because of the noise they produce. Many people are adopting the use of electric troll motors instead as an alternative because of their ineffectiveness. They work very silently while at the same time pushing the watercraft with enough thrust.

Benefits that make the use of electric motors outweigh the use of gasoline-powered motors are numerous. For, instance, the design is simple, which makes them simple and reliable. In the case of tiny vessels, the motor can adequately act as the primary source of power. On larger vessels, they can be secondary sources of power. The machine is able to power small boats so that they can be used for all operations that can be done from the vessel.

Deep cycle or marine batteries are used to power the machine. Thick copper battery cables link the motor to the battery and connect through a switch to facilitate application of current to the speed coil. The cables then go through a shaft within the motor. The drive or armature shaft and the mounted propeller are joined by speed coils. Once electric power runs through the speed coils, the propeller spins underneath the water and moves the watercraft.

Amount of power generated by the motor depends on several factors. Resistance level in the system and the size of the motor are some of these factors. One should understand that the speed at which the watercraft moves does not depend on the amount of thrust produced. A motor is able to move a bigger or heavier watercraft if it produces more thrust but the same thrust cannot make a smaller vessel move faster. There is no correlation between horsepower and thrust.

These products are capable of generating a wide range of thrust power, but they are not built to achieve great speeds. Their purpose is to make the vessel they are installed on troll. If one wants to achieve more speed, it would be best to buy an outboard motor of whatever horsepower depending on the speed one wants to achieve.

The market has specialty motors that are meant for specific applications. Thrust can range from 18 to 112 pounds or more. The type of battery setup used in the vessel will depend on the amount of thrust the motor is capable of generating. Products that generate lower thrust mostly use a 12V battery while bigger products require up to three 12V batteries.

Motors are characterized depending on the type of mount they come with. Bow and transom mounts are the two categories of amounts available. In the latter types of mount, the motor is mounted to the rear of the watercraft while control head is attached to a fiberglass or stainless steel shaft.
