Exploring Pyrotechnics In Art And Music

By Jeffrey Williams

When it comes to unique and unusual work, fire can often play a place. For, pyrotechnics is an area in which individuals need a lot of skill. Whereas, individuals can often also have fun simply by playing with the element, as long as done so safely. One area in which fire is at the center is in that of being a burner or fire dancer, either of which can be work or play.

When it comes to the term, the scope is much broader than fire. For, the word can relate to anything related to fire. In most cases, this includes fireworks, safety matches, oxygen candles, explosive bolts, parts of automotive air bags, gas pressure blasting used in mining, quarrying and demolition.

Fireworks, flames, smoke, flashes and explosions used in entertainment are often referred to as fire art, such as that which takes place at the Burning Man festival. The proximate location refers to the device's position relative to an audience. In most areas, special licensing and training must be completed along with permission of the owner of a venue or property when using any aspect of fire art.

While as noted by an incident with the band White Stripes, the technology can be a dangerous aspect for a band and spectators, especially when individuals are not trained on how to handle these type of devices. Whereas, when the equipment is operated properly and with caution, fire art can make for some of the most exciting shows in the history of concerts and live shows.

Once the technology become popular, other groups such as The Who, Kiss, Queen and others also began to incorporate the technology into live shows and videos. However, after Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire, there was a new sense of awareness as to the danger of using fire in this manner. Still, bands such as Green Day, Lori and others continue to use the technology on a regular basis.

Modern technology with regards to fire is broken into categories. Each category provides a different result when set off whether at a fireworks display or concert. In some cases, such as the finale at a fireworks show, multiple categories are used for a dramatic effect. However, it is important that producers and showgoers be extremely cautious and aware when this is the case.

When it comes to theatrical performances, most devices are used to create an effect of fire either coming out of an object. In this case, the term used to describe this aspect is known as gerb. In most cases, the use of devices in this area are often far safer than that of others. Still, even with live theater and movie productions, there can be incidents in which a fire can be started or an individual experiences a severe burn.

Regardless as to which type of device is being used, most are operated by remote control. In most cases, an individual uses an e-match or electrical charge to kick-start the device and produce an effect. Whether using this type of ignition, or a pre-programmed sequence of fireworks in different formats, most are set to music whether at a concert or professional fireworks display related to an event or holiday.
