Constructing different types of structures would involve some processes. Metal fabrication is being done in just three common processes such as assembling, bending, and cutting the metals. Sheet metals and structural steels are common materials for the start of projects. Other important tools include fasteners, flux, and welding wire. Production procedures are either used with human labor or with automation.

Metal surfaces may consist of some undesirable materials and these need to be removed using the refinement method or simply machining. This is very necessary for attaining the shape being desired. However, the method may be specialize or limited only to some extent. Usually, fab shops are incorporating their services with machining like metal lathes, magnet based drills, or mills.

Stores have been specializing multiple areas as well in the profession. But this will be highly dependent on the needs of the customers and expertise level in a particular specialty. Some common areas are powder coating, powder metallurgy, chipping, welding, and casting.
